Pro-Life or Not?
I am reading this great book by Shane Claiborne called "The Irresistible Revolution." The author is a Christian, but he is the type of Christian that Jesus was, not the type of Christian that we perceive ourselves to be. When he tries to live like Jesus, he really does. He is ALL about ending poverty in this nation, about feeding people, making wealth more "communal" (oh man would the Republicans HATE that!), and living like Jesus did. I certainly do not live like Jesus. I rarely communicate with the poor, the low in life's, the sick and diseased. I am not proud of myself for that. This book puts a new spin on Christianity and while most of our "churches" attest to following Jesus, it is certainly hard for them to "follow" Jesus on a 3-4 million dollar/year budget. Just saying...
With that said, he has an AMAZING quote on pro-life. I "am" pro-life, but I have always stated that I am pro-life in every sense of the word. Anti-war, pro-fetus, pro-helping children have a "headstart," etc....I am also not against abortion. I have never had one myself, I never plan on having one, but who am I to judge a person who has had one (I will admit that there comes a point when abortion is used as birth control, and I am not for that-we have the pill for goodness sake!). I am quite sure Jesus wouldn't condone abortions, but he would SURELY do everything in His power to help that woman who finds herself in a poor situation.
Shane's quote is this: “I must say that I am still passionately pro-life, I just have a much more holistic sense of what it means to be for life, knowing that life does not just begin at conception and end at birth, and that if I am going to discourage abortion, I had better be ready to adopt some babies and care for some mothers.”
I love this quote. If I am going to discourage abortion, I MUST be willing to adopt those babies and help those mothers out there that need it. As a quite fortunate mother myself, I realize this job is NOT an easy one. I have an education and a husband. Many don't. I sincerely believe that the next time a preacher in church preaches about "anti-abortion," etc, then he, who is so "pious" and living "like Jesus" should be the first in line to adopt some of the babies out in the world. Same with those political candidates who run on the platform of "pro-life"-again, I hate this, I wish that politics would just focus on the economy and defense and stay out of personal issues like abortion AND gay marriage, but they for some reason don't!
Read this book if you want an interesting perspective on Christianity.

You can't be liberal and christian right?!! Haha! Kidding of course! I agree politics would be more enjoyable if we could keep our own personal ethical convictions out of it. Not possible I guess since money is being spent by the government on items deemed ethical.
ReplyDeleteSounds like an interesting book, I will look for it at the library and let you know what I think.
