Is there common ground anymore?

Wisconsin had it's Governor Election on Tuesday. While the "blue" wave, sort of happened here in Wisconsin, and in other parts of the nation (the House is now Blue and the Senate gained a few more Red seats); I am actually more disheartened by this election than I was in the past.

One announcer said, "It appears as though the blue side has become even bluer and the Red even red-er" What does this mean? Division...

I feel like I am this really interesting shade of purple (you know blue and red mixed together). I vote mostly blue, but I maintain this inner red side as well. So, as I got to thinking, I don't feel my views are way off from what MOST Americans (or people in the entire world) want for the future and specifically our children.

--I want common ground on Gun Control. I want people to have their weapons (even though I personally don't have any). But I see no reason why people need Assault Rifles. I'm not talking hunting rifles or hand guns. Go ahead, have those. But Assault Rifles, unless you are in the Military seem to serve no purpose other than to kill lots of people at one time.

--I want common ground discipline. I want parents to discipline their children in a strong way from a young age. This doesn't have to be spanking per se, there are LOTS of forms of discipline that work. I want the school to also discipline my child and all the children so that the objective to LEARN is achieved.

--I want common ground Immigration. We are a country of immigrants. I know my ancestors come from a whole variety of places. But, if an immigrant messes up, abuse, assault, murder, anything above a misdemeanor, they are sent back to their home countries.

--I want gay marriage and gay rights and transgender equality--cause you don't realize the hurt these people have felt until you are related to one or you have them as your friends. And to be honest, no one cares what I do with my sex life, so I don't care what anyone else does either. People are people.

--I want common ground spending. Like my household. We buy ONLY what we can afford. We don't live paycheck to paycheck because we constantly save. We make a conscious decision everyday of "do we need this and can we afford this?" before we "add it" to the cart. Why can't our government do the same?

--I want the government in some parts of my life, but not all of it. I still want the freedom to do what I want (within good decisions). I don't want the government telling me or anyone what I can or cannot do with my body. If I get terminal cancer and choose to end my suffering, isn't that my right? Government needs to butt out of A LOT of personal decisions in life.

--I want a LEADER who my children can look up to in our country as a "decent person." I have a really really hard time allowing my children to follow the behavior of Mr.Trump. I wouldn't EVER allow that behavior in my house, therefore I can't, in good conscience allow my kids to copy him. Because how can I back up "Well, the President says it's ok to......." when it is truly NOT ok to ever do some of those things. That is not how my parents raised me and not how I will raise my kids.

--We need a military, but do we need to put SOOOO much money towards it?

--I want common ground on hard work. I've told my kids that hard work can take you just about anywhere in life. I sure wish that everyone else believed that. We try to show our kids how hard we work M-F so that we can enjoy each other a bit on the weekends.

--I want common ground on cops. I want them in our kids schools (HS and maybe MS), so maybe, just maybe that can actually form relationships with some of the challenging kids. I don't see cops as threats; because they aren't unless you've done something wrong. However, cops can use some training on working a whole variety of different people. And....fire them if appropriate. Seriously, fire people in government! Don't hang onto bad people. Make them get new jobs! OH, and fire teachers too if they are doing a poor job.

--I want common ground on climate change. It seems like something is up in our environment; so we can ignore it and call it a hoax, OR we can do small things to start to make a difference. Because, while some of the natural disaster's we've seen have been downright crazy big, my children are going to see disaster's that may wipe out human existence. And if it's not climate change that is causing this, then something is causing the storms to get larger and larger. Our poor children and grandchildren.

--I want common ground on screen time/video games/etc---my children rarely ask for ipads anymore. But you know what they did discover...MONOPOLY (I know..that is my fault but also my punishment ;(.) Children need to learn to interact WITH each other by talking and playing and creating and figuring out the problems. Putting kids on too much technology is going to alter their brains in ways we don't know about yet. So...there won't be a gaming system in our house for a long time yet. We've got a lot more growing to do.

--Oh yeah and I want common ground on Holidays. I want to teach Christmas music AND Hanukkah AND Kwanzaa and a whole variety of stuff...because, why can't we celebrate all the Holidays? Seriously!? The more parties the better!!!!!  Am I right??? Our world and social calendar is large enough for it all!!

I think most would agree nothing here seems out of touch. We all have common ground on MOST of these issues. We care and LOVE our children. We want them to grow up to be amazing people and have many of the same luxuries we have had...or a better life than we had. So I truly am looking for a candidate that can find the common ground and stand up for most things "right" in this world. Stand up for the truth.
